Thank you, Ken! I do enjoy teaching field sketching in my workshops. I mostly work with adults as I live in a retirement area. But, from time to time I’m asked to give lessons to children that are 7 – 8 yrs. old. It’s a challenge as their motor skill are still developing but they have no fear! I love it when parents want to keep their children’s minds open and not corner them into a left brain world. You’d be surprised how many left brain skills these kids have at such a tender age! I’d say the ‘symbols’ we use in the computer arena are taking over. Scary!

What a great article, primarily in the content, but also in the way that they used a number of your works. As I mention on my blog and website I’m a long-time abstract artist. And I also work in the computer field. But it is really sad to think that many people, especially younger ones, prefer the digital world to the natural one. I often think that they don’t even know that it exists. I think you expressed that very well in the article. For me it has led to temporary abandonment of abstract art and much more focus on the natural world.
I wasn’t lucky enough to grow up on a dairy farm but I did grow up on the outskirts of a small town in Illinois. Alfalfa fields were just down the block. I still think that the time I spent outside as a child was one of my most formative, and enjoyable experiences, and I think that everyone ought to be able to have that same experience.
Hopefully some of my work and that of other artists who work from nature helps to keep that desire alive. I suspect that it does. I’ve often found that if I start talking to people about either art or nature that many of them seem to have a secret hankering to know more about each.
