Autumn in the Lowcountry is by far my favorite season. While we don’t boast New England’s colors, the textures created by both color and form are such eye candy to me. Grasses bloom (we have so many) and they light up when the sun hits them. Wildflowers along the roadside are mainly yellow and white . But, now and then you’ll see a splash of purple. Nature knows the color wheel! We just need to pay attention : )

Ink and Watercolor at the Beach

We took our first vacation since Covid hit. It’s been so long since we left home, that I wasn’t sure quite what to pack. How many art supplies to bring? What type ? It felt so good to be thinking this way again!

Here are sections of a couple before and after pages. Contour lines and shading were done with pen, prior to adding watercolor.

Art Tools

My choice of supplies for the beach included Art Toolkit palettes, SketchBuddy Binder, Princeton Neptune brushes and a waterbrush. The sketchbook is a Stillman and Birn Beta softcover. Everything is clipped so I can move quickly should a dog go by that our dogs don’t cotton to. The other thing I decided to do with my journal entries was to use grey ink. Black seemed to harsh, brown didn’t suit. My pen of choice was a Uni Pin fiber tip in dark grey. I also decided to hand-letter in one style – something new and it took a lot of concentration! When Pat letters, she has such a wonderful flow. I have that flow with my normal lettering. However, the written words took quite a while to write. I had to keep remembering to make the horizontal lines high. I think it was just vacation brain – ha! Choosing one style of lettering did bring continuity to my pages, though. Here is a short video of all that was created. You’ll even see a Haiku or two! Hope you enjoy and do try some new art techniques!
