Join me as I meander through my January nature journal pages.
The Talens Art Creation 4.5" square journal has become a mainstay bring-along when I walk our pups in the neighborhood. The girls are getting real good at pausing while I make quick sketches. Sometimes I can add color on the spot, otherwise I'll take a photo and use it toadd color at home. In either case, the aim is to keep things simple and spontaneous. I find quick entries soothing and they calm my impatient soul when there's not enough time in the day for hours of art play.
How many times have you made an upside down sketch in your journal? I chose to celebrate this mistake with a new perspective and new possibilities for 2025.

Hi pam, very interesting. I’ve made an upside down sketch. I love the square sketchbooks from royal Talens, but the paper isn’t ideal for water color. But I’ve the same issue with stillman and birn… Do you have tips? What materialrdo you use in your royal Talens?
Ps looking forward to your online class x
Hi Ilse! Glad I’m not alone with upside down sketches : )
In the Royal Talens journal I’ve used light watercolor, water soluble pencils – both wc and graphite, colored pencils, posca markers, NeoColor I and II crayons, ink and gouache. Sometimes the watercolor pages bleed thru to the other side – most of the time it’s if I use more than one wash. I have better luck with one layer of wc and then once dry, go over with colored pencils to create value changes.
Beautiful, Pam!! I really enjoyed this email. Thank you! Aneta
Hi Aneta! Thank you. I see you have a wordpress.com site coming soon – Have fun. I’m scratching my head with wp.org version. Somehow this blog post went to both my blog and is hanging out in full on the blog page. This week’s tech adventure : )
