This morning was my maiden voyage on my new ‘PaintCycle’ – A hearty thank you to my in-laws for gift money to purchase a cruiser bicycle with a basket perfect for hauling art supplies 🙂
A tad chilly, make that a cold 33 degrees at 6:45 a.m., but I had to capture the Long-Night Moon that reached its peak of fullness at 5:22 a.m. EST.
I rode to the 7th green where the moon was about to dip behind far the trees. My light was positioned between the brake cords and the basket, but this setup will have to be tweaked as the light kept slipping and preventing me from painting. The whole expedition took about 20 minutes and I managed to capture the initial scene minus the houses across the water that line the 6th fairway. I so love not being a camera! The moon disappeared below the tree line. Ho hum, it’s tough when you have to go to work when all you really want to do is stay home and paint 🙂
Ooooooh, I’m so going to love traversing the trails on my PaintCycle and sketching!!!

How creative and wonderful to have a "Paint Cycle". I love it! I admire your enthusiasm for getting out there and catching the scenes as they happen. Happy New Year!

Hi CheyAnne! The lights that are propped on the handle bars usually drape over my neck and work well but for some reason I want painting in the shadow of my hands… difficult when it's already dark. I need to twist them differently as using the basket for my desktop is a bit higher than the usual painting on my lap when sitting routine… Love the Mother of Invention!

Looks great and I hope it works well for you 🙂 And thanks for always being willing to get out there and document the changing moons each month for those of us who either don't have the gumption or are looking at cloudy skies (like I was this morning and today). More snow coming in this evening and night will add another 1-3 inches but it sure it pretty when the roads are cleared. Happy Happy New Year!!

so fun to paint at night like this. Get yourself a headlamp. Some even have red light so it won't mess with starlight.

…very cool!!! Rick got me a hitch for my Jeep for Christmas so I can install a bike rack so I can get out with my paints too. I've never gotten a car part for Christmas!

So glad not being a camera spoke to you 🙂 Sometimes the need to record everything can shut us down as artists… especially when trying to capture the moment. My rule of thumb is to concentrate on what attracts me in the first place. The rest is fluff and in journaling, you can always write about other things that fill the scene. This allows you time to give what attracted you, your full attention and produces better results. Happy journaling!

My rule of thumb is to concentrate on what attracts me in the first place. The rest is fluff and in journaling, you can always write about other things that fill the scene. This allows you time to give what attracted you, your full attention and produces better results. Happy journaling!
Pam, love this post for so many reasons. First, my hubby is building me a "paint/sketch" cycle as we speak. I can relate to the excitement of a new toy and a basket to carry everything in. Second, I love seeing your techniques in watercolor, this picture included. But I think this post hit me hardest when you wrote "I so love not being a camera!" I had to read this a few times to get the full effect. But it is a great statement about choice in composition. Something I have probably always known but not really contemplated or put into practice. This is my new motto at we head into the new year. Thank you.
