What this Workshop Includes:

~How to Sketchpre-recorded video tutorial showing Pam’s favorite way to sketch, capturing the ‘life’ of your subject and teaching you how to really see what’s in front of you. Tutorial will be available May 9th.

~ Field Trip:  we’ll put sketching into action as we meander down the Greenway Trail. We will move slowly sketching the different plants we come upon and write some notes about each.  The trail is 1.3 miles. Chances are we won’t make it to the end, as we will take the time needed to complete our sketches as we go.  I will demo adding color using watercolor pencils and traditional watercolor paints with a waterbrush.

Tools of Discovery

When I first began nature journaling, my tools were very different then those I use today.  Some in part due to technology, some due to artistic choices as my art journey developed and grew.  Dip your toes in and try it out first.

You may come to this workshop already outfitted with art supplies you love.  If you are just starting out, below you’ll find info for basic supplies that will get you started. I hope very much that you’ll get hooked on nature journaling!

Other Necessities

• Dress for weather  •  Bug Spray  •  Suntan lotion • Hat • Lightweight camp stool if you prefer not to stand and sketch

Basic Tools for Nature Journaling

If you are just starting out, keep it simple.  The complete list of supplies I’ve used over the years is lengthy.  You can begin this amazing journey with limited supplies.

Sketchbook:  Mixed media or watercolor journal, no smaller than 5×7 or 6×6 . Any larger than 9 x 12 is cumbersome. Paper should not be real textured for easy writing.  Spiral bound books work well.

Mark making tools:  Mechanical pencil (7mm or 9mm lead in HB or 2B)  •  Ballpoint pen  and /or waterproof pen.

Adding Color:  Totally up to you!  Pencil and pen are great tools for journaling.  If you would like to try watercolor pencils, let me know.  I have some you can use during the field trip.  All you’ll need to get is a waterbrush.
