Why Do You Keep an Art Journal?

Here’s one of the many reasons why I do…

There are so many days that come and go without a single note made or photograph taken. While I don’t keep a daily journal, I do try to note things that touch me or are just plain eye candy for my art soul. I love journal pages filled with small squares to hold quick illustrations. Like everyone, life can get too demanding and squares begin to be skipped… No worries. Find whatever way works for you to record special things, moments and events you wish to remember. A life journey journal if you will.

I prefer to work from life, but that’s not always possible. Over the years I’ve also found that if my journal entry is going to take up an entire spread, I best finish it in one sitting or at least in the same day it’s started. As they say – ‘Tomorrow is promised to no one’ – not even time to finish a journal page!

Journaling during stressful times can be therapeutic. Each mark you make with your pencil, pen and brush turns into a prayer – at least that’s what I’ve found.

If you’d like to dive a little deeper into art as therapy, sign up for my newsletter. The April issue has a piece about this, along with some new class offerings.
