Thanks for such a wonderful class! You really unlocked sketching birds for me. And I enjoyed the community of sketchers and nature lovers that attended. I hope to come back for another class!

Thank you, Kathy! You have such a lovely touch with watercolors. I’m looking forward to seeing your finishing touches to Great Blue and Spunky Wren. Come on back down to the lowcountry. It will be great to work with you again!

About the Workshop:

Pencil drawing of tri-colored heron with watercolor on bill and eye , hand lettered name by pam johnson brickell

Do you have a
passion for birds?

Join Pam and learn field sketching techniques to help you quickly capture them in your journal and later develop your sketches into watercolor renderings.

With an intimate gallery setting as our backdrop, Session 1 begins with sketchbook study centered around bird proportions, details of the eye / bill area, how to simplify the shape of the feet, how to create a balanced bird and capture suggested wing details.

Session 2: Sketchbook study resumes, this time with watercolor paint. Bird's eyes and bills will be drawn larger than life and painted, capturing the subtle tone shifts, shadowing with highlights preserved. Part 2 of this session is creating tonal paint studies of simplified feet and suggested wing detail with watercolor so these shapes 'read' bird.

Session 3: The bones of the sketches made during Session 1 are transferred to watercolor paper. The eyes and beak are realistically rendered with paint, creating the focal area. The rest of body awaits lovely watery watercolor fun!

Skill Level:

Advanced beginner and beyond. Participants should fee comfortable with sketching and have some watercolor experience. The workshop is designed to build bird field sketching skills and introduce new ways to work with watercolor. Workshops are meant to be a learning experience. If by chance you create a rendering that you love - that's a wonderful bonus! Come join the art adventure!

Supplies Needed:

  • Water-media sketchbook
  • 2B pencil (soft enough to make light or dark lines and easily erased with watercolor)
  • Plastic and/or kneaded eraser
  • Watercolor brushes (round, small for fine details [size 4 or smaller] and larger for juicy washes [size 8 to 12]
  • Watercolor palette - whatever colors you have will be fine
  • Favorite watercolor paper (can be a pad or single sheets. If you are using a block of paper, bring 2. We have a three hour session for painting, so judge the size of paper you use to your speed of painting. I'd recommend nothing larger than 10x11 which is a full sheet cut down into 6 pieces. Also, you don't want to work real small - give yourself some space to have fun with watercolor, but not real large to be overwhelming.
  • Images of your favorite birds. Have at least 2. When it comes to painting, it's good to work on one while the other dries
  • Bring a snack and drink
